| Note | Obituary
Mr Andrew Green
Early associations with the colonisation of new Zealand were among the experiences of the late Mr Andrew Green of Cinder Hill, Feilding who passed away on Thursday in his 92 year.
Throughout his life he had followed labourious occupations and from the driving of bullock teams over hazardous country, he finally settled on the land where his energy and ambition had full scope.
Eight years after the settlement of Wellington the late Mr Green was born at Porirua Bay , where he spent his infant days. In the vigour of rising youth he soon answered the call of work to be done and at the age of twelve years was driving a bullock dray from Marton to Wanganui, along rough tracks, which settlers of that day knew as their lines of communicatiuion with more settled parts of the cpuntry. There were no bridges to make the journey lighter and on reaching the Wanganui river ,goods were dumped on the river bank to be ferried over. His return trip bought in supplies for the settlers of the Marton district.
The outbreak of the Maori war 1869 found the settlement in condition of alarm and Andrew Green joined the Militia and became a mounted trooper. However the war didn't spread into the Marton district and he was not called on to servr.
By those who knew him Mr Green is described as being a trtemendous worker. Deprived of the chances of proper schooling, since schools were so few and far between the late Mr Green applied unstinted energy to his farming industry. At Carnavon first, he later moved to Halcombe and then took up property at Makino, where he farmed for many years before retiring. There were no 40 hour weeks in those vigorous pioneering days and if he had only done 72 hours in a week he considered that he had not worked full time. Such were the pioneers of Mr Green's type.
The late Mr Green's wife predeceased him [some 19 years ago] as did two daughters and one son. There are left to survive him four sons, Messers J.A.Green [Cunninghams] A.A.Green [Hunterville] and A.E.Green [Makino]. Two daughters Mesdames H Curran [Hawera] and R McDougall [Ohakune]. In addition there are 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. The district which knew him for so long has lost a great friend and a gentleman who was always held in high esteem.
The funeral took place yesterday and was marked by a very large family representation as well as settlers of the district. Services at the residence at Cinder Hill and at the graveside at the Feilding Cemetery were conducted by Rev. G.H.Allen of Feilding assisted by Rev. H Curran of Hawera. The pall bearers were Messers Gordon, Kenneth and Lloyd Green of Stanway, William Green of Hunterville, L Funnell of Feilding and S Younger of Cinder Hill
